Mrs. Asher's Reading Group
Your child has been placed in their reading group from their performance in Kindergarten. Your child may not have their homeroom teacher for reading. Reading is a very important part of our First Grade day. We spend 1 & 1/2 hours at reading in the morning and 1 hour at reading in the afternoon.
Some ways to help your child do well in reading:
*Have your child read his/her take home sheet daily, and then initial it in the top right hand corner and send it back to school in their reading folder. *Practice letter sounds and blending words together. If your child makes a mistake when reading, tell him/her the word and then have him/her read the sentence again. * Read the little paper books, word lists, or other reading papers that come home Please initial that your child has read it to you. * Model smooth reading and expression by reading to your child. Then ask your child what happened first in the story, next, and last. *Make sure your child has had a good nights rest (at least 10-12 hours) and breakfast. |
In our reading class we have 2 groups. Both groups are in Signatures 1. While I work on reading with one group, the other group is working with Mrs. Wroolie, our reading Para. She works with the language, spelling, and writing. Many parents ask if we send home spelling words. They are working on the sounds and words that we work on during reading instruction, so there are no lists that go home.
Our goal for Winter is to read 51 words per minute in regular text material. You can help your child by having them read storybooks at home. Our Spring goal is 80 words per minute in regular text material. We will also be working on writing sentences that make sense, begin with a capital letter, and end with the correct punctuation. In the Spring we will work on writing paragraphs. Any extra practice writing at home will be helpful! |
