Things to Know About First Grade
Weekly Newsletters will be sent home on Fridays. These will highlight things that we have done that week, events coming up and skills you can be working on at home. Attached to each newsletter will be homework that needs to be completed and returned by Wednesday of the next week. Usually there will be a math game to play with your child. Please play these games to reinforce what we are learning in math. Good Citizen Awards are given out each month to those students who are in the Dragon Zone: respectful, responsible cooperative and safe. The awards are put up in the first grade hallway. Each student can earn it one time during the year. However, they may lose it if the proper behavior is not maintained. PBIS - First graders are expected to follow the four Dragon Zone rules of being respectful, responsible, cooperative and safe. Reading is a very important part of our first grade curriculum. We will spend 1 1/2 hours in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon on reading. All first graders are divided up into reading groups based on their performance level. Your child may not have their homeroom teacher for reading. Some of the reading teachers have reading folders that they send home daily with take home sheets and stories that need to be read, initialed and returned to school everyday. Reading 50 Books is a goal that must be met by all first graders. A book recording sheet will be sent home monthly. We start the Pizza Hut Book It program in October to help achieve this very important goal. Math Calendars will be sent home monthly. Stapled to the calendars will be suggestions of things that we are working on at school. It would be great to work on math activities with your child at home for 10 minutes each day. The calendars should be returned to school at the end of each month. Recess and lunch will be from 11:55 to 12:30 each day. Please dress your child appropriately for outside play. We will go outside unless it is raining or the temperature is below zero. You are welcome to join us for lunch any day. Adult lunch tickets cost $3.40. |
$15.00 Party and Snack Money is used for the Storybook Party at the end of October, Christmas Party and Valentine's Day Party, as well a daily morning snack. Checks should be made out to Mrs. Asher. Birthdays may be celebrated in first grade by bringing a store bought treat for the whole class. We have 21 students in our homeroom. The First Grade Program will be on Thursday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the elementary auditorium. Please mark your calendars. First Grade takes a field trip to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.
